Why we exist

The legal profession is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, driven by rapid advances in technology, growing economic pressures, and shifting client expectations.

Our mission is to help legal teams not just adapt, but lead in this new era.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how legal work gets done. A 2024 Thomson Reuters report found that 82% of law firm leaders expect generative AI to be widely adopted within the next five years, fundamentally changing legal research, drafting, and client service. Legal teams are under mounting pressure to do more with less: Gartner reports that 88% of legal departments are being asked to improve operational efficiency without increasing headcount or budget.

Clients are also demanding change. Modern businesses expect legal advisors to be proactive, tech-enabled, and collaborative - not slow, reactive, or opaque.

Everingham Legal exists to support legal teams through this shift. We help our clients build the strategies, processes, and technology foundations they need to be more agile, efficient, and aligned with the business. Our work is grounded in deep legal experience and a clear-eyed view of what’s coming next.

Our History

Everingham Legal is named after Matthew James Everingham, a convict turned colonial settler who arrived in Australia on the HMS Scarborough in 1788.

Born in London, England, Everingham worked as a law clerk before being convicted in 1784 at age 15 for stealing books. He was sentenced to seven years' transportation and was among the convicts sent to Australia.

Despite his convict status, Everingham became one of the colony's early success stories. After serving his sentence, he was granted land to farm and became a government constable. His primary duties involved maintaining law and order, supervising other convicts, and assisting in local enforcement.

Everingham's life illustrates the dramatic transformation possible in early colonial Australia — from convicted youth in London to free settler, landholder and law enforcer.

Founder and CEO of Everingham Legal, Matthew Eddy, is a descendant of Matthew Everingham.

Our People

Founder and CEO, Matthew Eddy, brings a rare blend of legal, technology, commercial, and strategic expertise built across in-house teams, public service, and private legal practice. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, he currently holds a Victorian Practicing Certificate.

Matthew spent eight years with the NSW Attorney General’s Department, working across both the criminal and civil divisions of the State’s busiest court precincts - the Downing Centre and Parramatta Justice Precinct. There, he worked closely with senior Magistrates and Judges in Local and District Court jurisdictions.

He has over five years of experience in criminal law practice at all levels, representing both privately funded clients and those receiving legal aid. During that period, he also led the go-to-market strategy for one of Australia’s largest criminal law firms as it expanded from Sydney into Melbourne.

In the commercial world, Matthew has spent over six years in B2B technology and advisory, including partnering with C-level leaders at global enterprises. He later led the international expansion of one of Australia’s fastest-growing legal tech companies, from Australia to New York.
